The Wettest Place on Earth — Scored
Meghalaya receives over 11,000mm of rain annually. Mawsynram and Cherrapunji fight for the title of wettest place on Earth every year. Most travel sites tell you to avoid monsoon. They're wrong — it depends on what you want.
Monsoon (Jun–Sep) — Score: 4/5
This is when Meghalaya becomes Meghalaya. Every waterfall is at full fury. Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall — goes from a trickle in March to a roaring 340m cascade. The living root bridges of Nongriat are surrounded by rushing streams. The landscape is impossibly green.
Downsides: roads get damaged, leeches are real, and some treks become risky. Carry waterproof everything. But if you came for waterfalls, this is the only time.
**Infrastructure:** Roads between Shillong and Cherrapunji are paved but expect landslides. Mobile network is patchy below 3G in villages. Homestays are the main accommodation — book ahead in Jul-Aug.
Post-Monsoon (Oct–Nov) — Score: 5/5
The sweet spot. Rain has mostly stopped, waterfalls are still strong, and the skies clear up for photography. Caves like Mawsmai and Krem Liat Prah are accessible again. Living root bridges are easier to trek to without slippery trails.
Temperature: 15-22°C. Perfect trekking weather. This is when Dawki river turns crystal clear — you can see the riverbed 15 feet down.
Winter (Dec–Feb) — Score: 3/5
Dry and cold. Shillong drops to 4-8°C at night. Waterfalls thin out significantly. The plus side: zero crowds, clear skies, and caves are at their best. Good for caving enthusiasts and those who hate rain.
Pre-Monsoon (Mar–May) — Score: 3/5
Warming up, occasional pre-monsoon showers start the waterfalls again. Cherry blossoms bloom in Shillong in March. Not peak anything, but pleasant enough.
The Verdict
Go Oct-Nov for the best all-round experience. Go Jun-Aug if waterfalls are your reason for existing. Skip Apr if you want to avoid the awkward in-between.
