Leh in December
Ladakh, India
December Leh is deep, uncompromising Himalayan winter. Temperatures range from -15 to -25°C at night and struggle to reach 0°C during the day. Water pipes freeze. Power is unreliable. The handful of open guesthouses run on bukhari stoves and generator backup. Both highways have been closed for weeks. Flights are the only connection to the outside world, and they cancel more than they fly. The Zanskar River begins its annual freeze, setting the stage for the Chadar Trek that starts in January. Leh town is as quiet as it gets — a few chai shops, the army cantonment, and locals going about winter life.
The December story
December is Leh at its most honest. No tourism veneer, no Instagram posturing — just a small Himalayan town enduring winter with practiced calm. The landscape is austere and magnificent: the Stok Kangri range gleaming white, the Indus semi-frozen with ice shelves forming along the banks, Leh Palace dusted in snow against slate-grey sky. The Losar (Ladakhi New Year) celebrations sometimes begin in late December, bringing local festivities, monastery rituals, and community gatherings that you won't find documented in any guidebook. Practically: you need serious winter preparation. Thermal base layers, down jacket rated to -25°C, insulated boots, hand warmers. Your phone battery will die in 20 minutes outdoors — keep it inside your jacket. Eat hot meals whenever available. SNM Hospital is your lifeline for altitude or cold-related issues. Chadar Trek operators begin pre-trek briefings in late December. If you're here for Chadar, this is staging time.
