The June story
Late June Umling La may open. The first visitors of the season find the BRO signboard, the prayer flags, and an altitude that makes breathing difficult within steps. The views — if the weather cooperates — stretch across the Karakoram to the north and the Greater Himalayan range to the south. The terrain is Mars-like: no vegetation, no water, no life above 5,500m. The colours are unearthly — brown, red, grey, and the deep blue-black sky of extreme altitude. The road quality varies: paved sections alternate with gravel and loose rock. Drive slowly — a flat tyre at 5,800m is a genuine emergency. The return to Hanle after the summit is the reward: hot food, shelter, and oxygen. June Umling La is for the early-season pioneer who accepts that everything is harder at this altitude.
