Leh in June
Ladakh, India
Go in June — both Manali and Srinagar passes are open, weather is stable, and monastery festivals are live, but altitude acclimatisation takes 2–3 days and nights still freeze.
June is when Leh hits full power. Both highways — Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh — are open, making the complete road circuit possible for the first time. Temperatures are ideal at 8-25°C. Every hotel, restaurant, monastery, and tour operator is running. All permits (Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri, Hanle) are being issued. Khardung La, Chang La, and Tanglang La are all passable. Rafting on the Zanskar and Indus rivers begins. The landscape is stark and magnificent — brown mountains, blue sky, white clouds, zero haze. This is textbook Ladakh.
The June story
June delivers Ladakh's full menu without July's overcrowding. The Manali-Leh highway (473 km, typically 2 days with overnight at Sarchu or Jispa) is freshly opened and at its most dramatic — snowfields still line the passes while the valleys below are turning green. The Srinagar route through Kargil offers a different landscape entirely — greener, more Kashmiri. Pangong Lake is thawing and shifting through impossible shades of blue. Nubra Valley's sand dunes at Hunder with Bactrian camels are accessible and not yet trampled. Magnetic Hill, Hall of Fame, and Leh Palace are all comfortably visitable. Hemis Monastery starts preparations for the Hemis Festival (usually late June or early July — check dates). The cafe scene in Changspa is in full swing. Booking tip: June is cheaper than July-August by 20-30%. Acclimatize 2 days in Leh before heading to higher-altitude excursions. Jio works in town; no signal at Pangong.
