Umlingla in March
Ladakh, India
March: still winter-locked. BRO road clearance hasn't reached the Umling La approach. The Changthang plateau is beginning its thaw at lower elevations but 5,883m is months from being accessible.
The March story
Still closed. March preparation: the altitude at Umling La (5,883m) is higher than Everest Base Camp (5,364m). The physiological challenges are real: headache, nausea, breathlessness, and potentially dangerous HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema). The acclimatization protocol matters: Day 1-2 in Leh (3,500m), Day 3 drive to Hanle (4,500m) with overnight, Day 4 attempt Umling La and return to Hanle. Some operators add a night at Chumur (4,200m) for extra acclimatization. Diamox (125mg twice daily, starting 24 hours before ascent) reduces AMS symptoms significantly. Carry Dexamethasone as emergency medication. The road itself is surprisingly good — BRO maintains it for military use — but the last 20km is unpaved. Any vehicle breakdown at 5,500m+ is a serious situation. Go with a reliable operator, not the cheapest.
