Umlingla in December
Ladakh, India
At -25°C with everything frozen shut, there's literally nowhere to sleep or eat
December: impossible. Umling La at 5,883m in December is one of the coldest accessible points on earth. No road, no access, no human activity. The BRO engineering achievement — building and maintaining a road at this altitude — becomes even more impressive when you consider what December does to it.
The December story
Deep winter. The highest road on earth is frozen, buried, and irrelevant until summer. The Changthang at its most extreme supports only the hardiest wildlife and the occasional military patrol. Plan for July-September. The Umling La experience — 3 days from Leh, one push to the summit, a selfie that proves you stood at 5,883m — is a bucket-list item that requires specific conditions, genuine preparation, and respect for altitude. Don't rush the planning. The road will be there next summer. Make sure you're ready for it.
