Caution
Umlingla in October
Ladakh, India
October: Umling La closing. Early October may allow passage if snow hasn't arrived, but conditions are deteriorating. The approach from Hanle is getting colder (-15°C at the pass). The BRO may announce road closure any day. Only attempt with current intelligence and emergency self-sufficiency. By late October, the pass is done.
The October story
Early October is the closing gamble. The pass may be open, may not. Snow can arrive overnight at 5,883m even in early October. The approach from Hanle is colder, the road may have ice patches, and the margin for error shrinks. If it works, October Umling La is the most dramatic: fresh snow on the Karakoram, the pass in thin autumn air, and the knowledge that you're among the last visitors of the year. If it doesn't work, you get stranded on the Changthang in deteriorating conditions. Only attempt with current BRO road status confirmed within 24 hours. Carry emergency supplies, warm gear, and a backup plan that doesn't involve the summit.
