The February story
Closed. The Umling La logistics are worth understanding: the standard route from Leh goes via Upshi (77km), Chumur (170km), Hanle (250km), and then 60km further to the pass. The first overnight is usually Hanle, where the Indian Astronomical Observatory sits at 4,500m — one of the world's best sites for optical and infrared astronomy. The Hanle Monastery (17th century) overlooks the Hanle valley. Homestays at Hanle (₹1,000-2,000) provide basic but warm accommodation. From Hanle, the Umling La push is 60km on BRO-maintained road gaining 1,383m to the summit. The ascent should be done in early morning (starting 5-6am) when conditions are calmest. Spend no more than 15-30 minutes at the pass — the altitude makes every minute taxing. Descend the same day. The total Leh-Umling La-Leh circuit is typically 3 days minimum.
