Tosamaidan in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Road conditions too rough for standard vehicles; access uncertain until late month
April begins the thaw at Tosamaidan. Lower sections of the approach trails show patches of green. The snowmelt feeds streams that cascade through the surrounding pine forests. The meadow itself (3,000m) is still mostly snow-covered. Early-season trekkers may attempt the approach from Yusmarg but conditions above 2,500m remain wintry. The reopening is weeks away.
The April story
April is scouting month. The Yusmarg trailhead area (2,396m) begins clearing. Walking the first few kilometres of the trail — through pine and fir forest — gives a sense of what the full trek involves. The forest section is beautiful in April: spring wildflowers, bird activity, snowmelt streams. But the meadow above is still snow-covered. The approach from Doodhpathri side (also possible, less common) is similarly blocked above treeline. April Yusmarg itself is a destination worth visiting — the meadow there is more accessible and shows what Tosamaidan will look like in a month. Use April to test your gear, fitness, and interest before committing to the full June trek.
