Peak Season
Pahalgam in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April is Pahalgam's spring breakthrough. Temperatures: 4-16°C. The Lidder Valley greens rapidly. Betaab Valley reveals its meadows. Aru Valley road opens fully. Snow remains on upper peaks but the valley floor is lush. Wildflowers—crocuses, irises, tulips—create the first colour carpets. Tourist numbers begin climbing.
The April story
April Pahalgam is perhaps the valley's most beautiful month—everything is emerging, nothing is overcrowded. Betaab Valley in April, with the meadow half-green and half-snow, the river thundering through, and pine forests flanking both sides, is genuinely one of India's most stunning landscapes. Aru Valley (12 km from town), a Gujjar pastoral village with a glacial meadow, is accessible and breathtaking—the starting point for the Kolahoi Glacier trek that opens in June. The Lidder River is in powerful spring flow, and early-season rafting may be available. The pony rides to Baisaran meadow (mini-Switzerland, as locals optimistically call it) are pleasant in April temperatures. The town wakes up: restaurants reopen, the market stocks up, and the first tourist buses arrive. April is when you see Pahalgam before the world does.
