Peak Season
Verinag in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April is Verinag at its spring best — 10-22°C. The Mughal garden is fully green. The octagonal spring pool, lined with stone arches and surrounded by chinar trees leafing out, is Mughal hydraulic engineering at its most elegant. The Jhelum's birth from this crystal pool is genuinely moving. The surrounding apple orchards bloom. Few tourists know Verinag exists.
The April story
April Verinag is the visit that converts casual tourists into Mughal-garden devotees. The octagonal pool in full spring — green garden, leafing chinars, blooming orchards, snow peaks visible above — is a Mughal composition that rivals the famous Srinagar gardens with a fraction of the visitors. Maybe 20-30 people per day in April versus thousands at Shalimar. The stone arches, designed to frame views of the spring from multiple angles, work exactly as intended. The canal that carries Jhelum-water from the spring through the garden follows Mughal hydraulic engineering principles: gravity-fed, stone-lined, and elegant. Walking along the canal's first few hundred metres — following the Jhelum at its youngest — is a specific pleasure. The JKTDC rest house for lunch or overnight. Anantnag town (26km) offers better dining. April Verinag is Kashmir for those who've outgrown the standard tourist circuit.
