Achabal in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Go in April — gardens are at peak bloom, water clarity is excellent, and daytime temps are ideal for walking without heat stress.
Peak crowds
April is one of Achabal's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Spring and autumn peak for Mughal gardens; summer heat and monsoon drive tourism down.
The Mughal gardens roar back to life in April. Achabal's spring-fed fountains run at full force after snowmelt, the terraced flowerbeds fill with colour, and the chinar trees leaf out in bright green. This is the month Jahangir would have chosen.
The April story
Achabal was the last of the great Mughal gardens in Kashmir, built by Empress Nur Jahan around 1620. April shows you why she chose this spot: the natural spring feeds the entire garden system without any mechanical intervention. Three terraced levels of fountains, channels, and pools — all gravity-powered, all running at peak flow. The chinar trees provide dappled shade, tulips and irises line the walkways, and the mountain backdrop still has snow. Combine with Verinag (the spring where the Jhelum river begins) for an unbeatable day trip through Mughal Kashmir's water gardens.
