Tosamaidan in March
Jammu & Kashmir, India
March: Tosamaidan still under snow. Lower trails may start clearing but the meadow itself remains winter-locked. The approach from Yusmarg (12km trek) or Doodhpathri side is blocked. Avalanche risk on slopes. No services. The annual wait for the meadow to reveal itself continues.
The March story
Still closed. March planning: the Tosamaidan trek is best done as a 2-day trip from Yusmarg. Day 1: trek to the meadow (12km, 4-5 hours), camp. Day 2: explore the meadow, return. Or extend to 3 days to fully appreciate the scale. Equipment needed: tent, sleeping bag (rated to 0°C minimum), cooking gear, water purification. The meadow has no facilities. Mobile phone signal is nonexistent. The nearest help is Yusmarg, 12km back. This is genuine wilderness trekking. The reward: one of the largest alpine meadows in Asia, returned from military use just a decade ago, with minimal human impact. A few adventure tour operators in Srinagar (Kashmir Hikes, Cliffhangers India) offer guided Tosamaidan treks in season. Book for June-September.
