Peak Season
Tosamaidan in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May opens Tosamaidan cautiously. Snow retreats from the meadow edges. The first green shoots appear through receding white. The approach trek from Yusmarg (12km, 4-5 hours) becomes viable though snow patches remain. Temperatures at 5-15°C. The scale of the meadow starts revealing itself — this is not a small clearing but a vast grassland ringed by mountains. Wildflowers begin.
The May story
Late May opens the window. The trek from Yusmarg starts in spring-green forest and climbs through increasingly snow-patched terrain to the meadow edge. The first sight of Tosamaidan — a vast, open grassland emerging from snow, with mountain walls on three sides — is the payoff for the 4-5 hour walk. May conditions: mixed snow and green, meltwater streams everywhere, the ground soft and cold. Camping on the meadow in May requires serious cold-weather gear (temperatures drop to -5°C at night). The wildflowers haven't started yet but the scale is already evident. The demining history is visible in places — occasional marked areas, cleared zones, the awareness that this ground was dangerous a decade ago. May Tosamaidan is for the equipped and motivated — not casual hikers.
