Tosamaidan in February
Jammu & Kashmir, India
February keeps Tosamaidan sealed. Maximum snow depth. The meadow that locals call 'Kashmir's biggest grassland' is invisible under white. The demining that reopened this area (completed 2014 after decades of military use) was one of J&K's most significant environmental reclamations. The reward sits under metres of snow until May.
The February story
Still sealed. Use February to research and plan the trek. The approach from Yusmarg (12km, 4-5 hours) is the standard route. The trail passes through dense conifer forest with a gradual climb from 2,400m to 3,000m. No tea stalls, no shelters, no services en route — carry everything. Camping at the meadow is the only accommodation option. The Gujjar shepherds who return each summer are welcoming but don't run tourism services. A local guide from Yusmarg (₹500-1,000 per day) is strongly recommended — the trail isn't marked. The meadow itself is vast — 31 sq km, larger than many European villages. The wildflower bloom peaks July-August. The golden autumn meadow in September-October is equally spectacular. This is not managed tourism — it's genuine frontier trekking in a reclaimed landscape.
