Sonamarg in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Road access remains uncertain until late April, leaving little margin for spring travel plans
April sees BRO clearing the Srinagar-Sonamarg road. By late April, the road may open to Sonamarg itself, though Zoji La remains closed. The meadows show first green under retreating snow. The Sindh River runs with snowmelt. Thajiwas Glacier is still under heavy snow. Early visitors find a half-awake mountain town — guesthouses opening, pony-wallahs returning, the smell of fresh paint and old chai.
The April story
Late April Sonamarg is raw and awakening. If the road is open (check with J&K tourism), you find a meadow transitioning from white to green in real time. The streams are in full voice. The snow-capped peaks are close and dramatic against the spring-green valley floor. The Thajiwas Glacier approach may have heavy snow — ponies are the practical option. The tourist camps are setting up — watching the annual resurrection of Sonamarg's seasonal economy is its own spectacle. Guesthouses at ₹800-1,500 are basic but functional. The drive from Srinagar through the Sindh Valley — past Kangan, Gund, and Gagangir — is increasingly beautiful as you climb. April is Sonamarg for the early bird who doesn't need polish.
