Sonamarg in March
Jammu & Kashmir, India
March keeps Sonamarg sealed. Snow melts at lower elevations but the meadow at 2,800m and the Zoji La approach remain winter-locked. Avalanche debris litters the road between Gagangir and Sonamarg. The BRO begins clearance planning. The first melt-streams appear. Opening is 6-8 weeks away.
The March story
Still closed. March is planning time. Key logistics: stay in Srinagar (80km, better hotels, more options) and day-trip to Sonamarg, or camp at the meadow for the full experience. The Thajiwas Glacier walk is the must-do: 2.5km from the road, ponies available (₹500-1,000), or walk (45 minutes). The glacier is receding but still dramatic. The meadow itself is the experience — one of the most beautiful alpine meadows in the Himalayas, ringed by 4,000-5,000m peaks. June is the classic month; September is the insider's choice.
