Sonamarg in December
Jammu & Kashmir, India
December: Sonamarg is completely closed. Deep snow, no road access, no services. The meadow is buried. The Zoji La is impassable. Even the military uses the alternative tunnel route. Sonamarg will reopen in April-May. The golden meadow sleeps under white.
The December story
December: completely closed. The Meadow of Gold sleeps under snow. The entire Sonamarg infrastructure — camps, hotels, pony services — is dismantled or winterized. The Z-Morh tunnel project (check status) may eventually enable winter tourism, including potential skiing. Until then, December Sonamarg is a concept, not a destination. The Sindh Valley from Srinagar remains partly drivable in clear weather for partial views. Plan your visit for June (bloom) or September (gold). Both months deliver on the name.
