Peak crowds
April is one of Katra's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Vaishno Devi pilgrimage busiest spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov); winter snow and monsoon reduce pilgrim flow.
April at Katra is the year's spring peak window. Daytime 24-27C, nights 13-16C, the trail at its most pleasant for the 13.5km Banganga-Bhawan trek. Daily pilgrim flow runs at 35-45k baseline (90 percent above winter levels). If Chaitra Navratri stretches into the first week of April, the early-month flow tops 60-70k. School holidays in the second fortnight drive a family rush. Helicopter at full reliability — book 30-45 days ahead through iaffire.gov.in for the second half of April. RFID Yatra Parchi registration online is strongly recommended. Battery car and pony at full operation. Hotel rates climb 30-35 percent above January-February. The Bhawan Aarti at 6:15am morning and 7pm evening sees long queues; arrive 2 hours early. Bhairon Mandir extension trail is fully clear. The 1.62km cave passage at the Bhawan continues to operate the standard ID-checked queue system. Sanjichhat dharamshala accommodation books 7-10 days ahead. Carry one extra light layer for Bhawan-temperature drop after sundown.
