Yusmarg in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Go in April—the meadow is greening after snow melt, wildflowers are emerging, and it remains quiet and peaceful before season peak.
April opens Yusmarg properly — 5-18°C. The meadow turns green with wildflowers starting. The surrounding pine and fir forests are in spring freshness. The snow-capped Pir Panjal range provides the backdrop. The Doodhganga River (Milk River, named for its white rapids) runs with snowmelt. The absence of tourist infrastructure is both Yusmarg's limitation and its magic.
The April story
April Yusmarg in spring is the meadow Kashmir's tourism industry would kill for — if it knew about it. The wildflower season starts: buttercups, daisies, and wild iris against green grass and snow-capped Pir Panjal. The pine and fir forest trails are perfect walking temperature. The Doodhganga River valley walks (gentle, following the river through forest) are meditative. The horse rides across the meadow are available from local operators (₹300-500). The JKTDC hut and 2-3 private guesthouses offer basic but warm accommodation (₹600-1,500). The drive from Srinagar (47km, 2 hours) passes through the Doodhganga valley — the river giving the road its name and character. April Yusmarg is what Gulmarg was 40 years ago: a pristine meadow with mountains, forests, wildflowers, and almost nobody.
