Jammu & Kashmir, India
Heavy snow imminent and most infrastructure closing for winter
November: Sonamarg is closing or closed. Snow arrives. The road from Srinagar becomes unreliable past Gagangir. Tourist infrastructure is shut. The meadow disappears under snow. The Thajiwas Glacier approach is blocked. A few hardy locals remain. Sonamarg has entered its six-month winter hibernation.
The November story
November Sonamarg is closed or closing. Early November in a dry year might allow a day trip from Srinagar if the road is clear to Gagangir and beyond, but this is not reliable. The meadow under first snow is dramatic but inaccessible by tourist infrastructure. The Z-Morh tunnel, when complete, may change this. For now, November Sonamarg is a six-month goodbye. The Sindh Valley from the Srinagar side remains beautiful in autumn — you can drive part of the route and turn back. But the meadow itself is sealed.
