Jammu & Kashmir, India
Peak crowds
March is one of Katra's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Vaishno Devi pilgrimage busiest spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov); winter snow and monsoon reduce pilgrim flow.
March at Katra is the spring opening. Daytime 19-22C, nights 9-12C, the Bhairon trail fully clear of snow, helicopter operations at full reliability. The big calendar event is Chaitra Navratri — nine days falling in late March or early April depending on the Vikram Samvat calendar (the 2026 dates land March 18-26). During Navratri, daily pilgrim flow surges to 50-70k versus the off-Navratri 18-25k. RFID Yatra Parchi pre-registration at maavaishnodevi.org or shrineboardyatraregistration.in becomes essential during the Navratri window — walk-in slots tighten sharply. Battery car, pony service, helicopter all run at peak through the period. Outside Navratri, March runs cleanly. Hotel rates climb 25-30 percent during Navratri week, otherwise hold at January-February levels. The Bhawan Aarti experience benefits from arriving 90 minutes early in non-Navratri stretches (much earlier in Navratri). Trek route at the most photogenic — wildflowers along the Adkuwari-Sanjichhat stretch. Helicopter from Katra-Sanjichhat: 8 minutes, ₹2,320 one-way.
