Peak crowds
October is one of Katra's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Vaishno Devi pilgrimage busiest spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov); winter snow and monsoon reduce pilgrim flow.
October at Katra is the year's defining month. Daytime 24-26C, nights 14-17C, the post-monsoon trail at its cleanest, weather perfect for the trek. Sharad Navratri (the 9 days of Maa Durga, October 11-19 in 2026 — confirm against the Hindu calendar each year) drives the year's biggest pilgrim flow: 60-80k/day across the nine days, with 600,000-800,000 cumulative pilgrims through the Bhawan. Outside Navratri, October still runs 40-55k/day. RFID Yatra Parchi pre-registration at maavaishnodevi.org becomes mandatory in practice; walk-in slots fill 6am for the same day's yatra. Helicopter Katra-Sanjichhat books 60 days ahead at iaffire.gov.in and sells out for the Navratri window within hours of release. Hotels in Katra at 100 percent occupancy through Navratri; rates climb 80-100 percent above January. Battery car, pony service, dharamshala accommodation at full strain. The Bhawan Aarti queue runs 5-7 hours during Navratri. Bhairon Mandir extension trail at full operation. Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami (the two peak Navratri days) see helicopter and trail at maximum capacity. Off-Navratri stretches in October are still strong but considerably more peaceful.
