Jammu & Kashmir, India
December at Katra is the cool-weather pilgrim window. Daytime 15-17C, nights 5-8C, weather generally clear and trail conditions excellent. Daily pilgrim flow runs at 25-35k for most of the month. The big surge is Christmas-NY week (December 23 to January 2): family trips drive flow to 50-60k/day. RFID Yatra Parchi registration recommended for the year-end window; walk-in still possible. Helicopter Katra-Sanjichhat at full reliability through the first three weeks; weather cancellations begin from December 25 onwards as the first winter snow arrives. The Bhairon Mandir extension trail (2km uphill from the Bhawan, 6,700 feet) starts seeing first snowfall around December 20-25 — closure events possible from late month. Hotels in Katra at 90-100 percent occupancy for the year-end rush; rates 50-60 percent above off-season. Battery car and pony at full operation. The Bhawan Aarti queue runs 2-3 hours through the year-end window. Carry warm layers; the Bhawan side temperature drops below 5C after sundown.
