July is Karla-Bhaja's annual peak month. The western Sahyadri ridge receives some of the highest July rainfall in India outside the Konkan and Cherrapunji belts. Karla's entire basalt cliff face becomes a waterfall — the chaitya hall entrance overlooks a 50m+ seasonal cascade. Bhaja's south-facing cliff line develops 4-5 distinct waterfalls. The cave 12 music-room with its 2nd-c-BCE dance reliefs sits beneath one cascade; cave 18 with its stupa cluster catches another. Photography is dramatic and the spiritual logic — why Hinayana monks chose these cliffs over Karla's 37 octagonal pillared chaitya entrance — becomes architecturally obvious. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has Khandala-Lonavala fog and aquaplaning advisories; the Karla cave-hill steps are slippery but climbable. This is the single reason these caves are recommended in Maharashtra travel writing.
