Karla & Bhaja Caves in August
Maharashtra, India
August continues the peak monsoon spectacle. Lonavala-Khandala receives some of its highest August rainfall on record (the Pune district averages 800-1000mm in August alone). Karla and Bhaja waterfalls are at full flow. The greater Lonavala-Khandala scenic belt — Tiger Point, Bushi Dam, Pavna Lake, Tikona Fort — is all at peak too. The Karla chaitya hall interior stays dry through the heaviest rain; basalt overhangs work. The challenge is the 350-step climb to Karla's entrance in rain — wear grip-soled shoes and budget for slow ascent. The Ekvira Devi temple stays operational. Bhaja, with its 22 caves spread across a single hillside accessed via 200 steps, is easier wet-weather logistics than Karla. The Bhaja waterfalls past cave 12 are at photographic peak. Sankashti Chaturthi Aug 4 brings small Ganesh-anchor flow.
