Bangus Valley in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April begins the thaw at lower elevations, but Bangus at 3000m is still snowbound. The mountain passes that provide access (Sadhna Pass from Kupwara, or the Handwara approach) may begin clearing but won't be passable until late May at earliest. Planning and permit applications should start now.
The April story
April is when your Bangus planning should be concrete. Permits: apply to Handwara DC office with copies of ID, itinerary, and tour operator details. Some operators handle this for you. Equipment: you need proper camping gear rated for 0°C nights (even in summer), water purification, first-aid kit, and enough food for your entire stay plus one emergency day. The approach trek requires good fitness â 6-8 hours of mountain walking with elevation gain. April is also when you can trek to nearby lower valleys (like Lolab Valley) to build fitness and get a taste of north Kashmir's landscapes. The permit office becomes active in April as summer season approaches. Don't wait until June to start the process â the bureaucracy takes time.
