Bangus Valley in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Bangus Valley is sealed under deep snow in January. At 3000m in the Shamsbari range, this frontier meadow is completely inaccessible — no road, no trail, no facilities. The Indian Army maintains a presence, but civilians cannot and should not attempt entry.
The January story
Bangus Valley is one of Kashmir's last genuinely undeveloped alpine destinations. It requires a permit from the Handwara District Commissioner's office because of its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. In January, none of this matters because access is physically impossible. If you're dreaming of Bangus in winter, channel that energy into planning a June-September trip. The permit process requires: a valid ID, a local sponsor or registered tour operator, and 2-3 weeks of processing time. Start planning now for a summer visit. The valley has zero infrastructure — no guesthouses, no shops, no phone signal. You carry everything in and everything out. January Bangus is a planning month, not a visiting month.
