Bangus Valley in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Late May sometimes opens the first trail access, though snow patches remain across the meadow. This is when serious trekkers and expedition groups begin testing routes. The permit process through the Handwara DC office takes time â start early. The valley is raw, freshly thawed, and startlingly green.
The May story
Late May access is a maybe, not a guarantee. If snow has been lighter than average, the Handwara approach opens; if heavy, expect June. The first trekkers into Bangus each season find a valley just emerging from six months of snow â the grass is flattened, the streams are roaring with snowmelt, and the wildflowers haven't started yet. It's beautiful in a raw, just-woken way. The Gujjar shepherds haven't arrived yet, so you have the entire 30 sq km valley to yourself. This is Bangus at its most wild and its most demanding â trails may be unclear under late-snow patches, streams may be uncrossable, and nights are cold (0-5°C). If you're an experienced mountain camper who doesn't need trails or people, late May Bangus is extraordinary. Everyone else: wait for June.
