February keeps Bangus buried. Snow depth can exceed 6 metres in the valley floor. The permit office in Handwara doesn't process applications in winter. This is one of Kashmir's most remote valleys, and February reminds you why most people have never heard of it.
The February story
Use February to research and plan a Bangus expedition for summer. Key logistics: the permit from Handwara DC office (allow 2-3 weeks minimum), a registered Kashmiri tour operator who has done Bangus before (essential — route knowledge matters), camping equipment for full self-sufficiency, and provisions for 3-5 days in the valley. The approach trek from Handwara side takes a full day through forest and over a ridge. From Kupwara via Sadhna Top takes longer but is more scenic. There is no mobile signal in the valley. No medical facilities. No rescue helicopter landing zone that's officially established. Bangus is not for casual trekkers — it's for experienced, self-sufficient wilderness travellers who understand what 'no infrastructure' means. February is for earning that understanding through preparation.
