Peak Season
Auli in February
Uttarakhand, India
February extends ski season with the deepest snowpack. The slopes are at their best, the cable car (Asia's longest at 4km) runs daily, and the GMVN ski resort operates lessons for beginners. Temperatures hover around -5 to 5°C. The Himalayan wall is razor-sharp against blue sky.
The February story
February is Auli's peak month. The National Winter Games have been held here. Snowpack is at its deepest — 2-3 metres on the upper slopes. The GMVN ski school runs 7-day and 14-day courses that include equipment, instruction, and accommodation. For experienced skiers, the slopes are short but satisfying, and the off-piste possibilities toward Gorson Bugyal are exciting with proper guidance. The cable car ride in February, through a frozen forest with snow-laden branches, is worth the trip even if you don't ski. Nanda Devi in February — when the air is at its cleanest and the snow on the summit catches morning light — is the kind of view that rearranges your sense of scale. Joshimath has improved its hotel stock recently. Book GMVN ski courses well in advance.
