Lolab Valley in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April transforms Lolab into the meadow valley it's famous for. Wildflowers carpet the valley floor—crocuses, irises, buttercups in succession. Temperatures hit 10-20°C. The deodar forests are alive with birdsong. The Gujjar herders begin moving their flocks to higher pastures. The valley road is fully open and the drive from Srinagar (120 km, 4 hours) is through beautiful countryside.
The April story
This is Lolab's emerging month—the valley is at its most picturesque and still virtually tourist-free. Bangus Valley, the alpine meadow above Lolab, starts becoming accessible on foot (4-5 hour trek from the valley floor). The combination of flowering meadows, snow-capped peaks, dense forest, and rushing streams makes it hard to believe this place doesn't have a single hotel. It's Kashmir before tourism found it. The Lolab walnut orchards are in full leaf. Local food improves with spring—fresh greens, morel mushrooms foraged from the forest floor (a Kashmiri delicacy worth ₹5000/kg in city markets, served casually here), and fresh trout from the streams. A vehicle, a tent, and local contacts—that's all you need.
