Doodhpathri in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April opens Doodhpathri properly. Snow retreats to higher elevations, the meadows emerge in startling green, and the milky streams begin their characteristic flow through grass that has been dormant for five months. Temperatures: 2-14°C. Basic facilities begin appearing.
The April story
This is when Doodhpathri reveals why Kashmiris call it a secret paradise. The meadows, rolling and vast at 2,730 metres, are a green so intense it looks digital against the remaining snow on surrounding peaks. The streams run milk-white with glacial sediment — this is not a marketing name, it is a description. Wildflowers begin cautiously: crocuses first, then iris. Pony operators from nearby villages set up by mid-April. The forest department opens its checkpost. No hotels exist in Doodhpathri itself — day trip from Srinagar (3 hours each way) or basic camping. April is the preview before the main show.
