Kufri in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
March thaws Kufri to 2-12°C. Snow melts. The apple orchards below the resort area show first buds. The yak rides shift from snow to muddy tracks. The Himalayan Nature Park animals are more active in spring warmth. Weekend traffic from Shimla continues. March Kufri is the transition from winter gamble to spring certainty — neither dramatic nor disappointing.
The March story
March Kufri is transitional and unremarkable. The snow is gone (usually), the spring hasn't fully arrived, and the tourist infrastructure operates on autopilot. The Nature Park is worth 60-90 minutes — the Himalayan brown bear, snow leopard, and musk deer are genuine Himalayan species, and the park's altitude means they're in semi-natural habitat. The horse ride to Mahasu Peak (Rs 500-800, 45 minutes each way) passes through pine forest and rewards with views on clear days. The apple orchards below Kufri show first blossom in late March. For Shimla visitors, March Kufri is a half-day excursion — leave by 9am, explore until 1pm, lunch at a dhaba, return. It doesn't merit an overnight stay. The Shimla-Kufri-Fagu-Narkanda road is one of the better Himalayan drives and provides more value than Kufri alone. Budget: day-trip costs Rs 500-1500 (transport, horse ride, park entry, food).
