Caution
Kufri in July
Himachal Pradesh, India
July monsoon makes Kufri a muddy proposition — 300-400mm of rain. The ski slope becomes a green hillside. The horse trails are slippery. The Nature Park animals shelter from rain. The road from Shimla gets landslide-prone stretches. Tourist numbers drop to die-hard monsoon visitors and locals who don't care about weather. Kufri's limited attractions are at their least attractive.
The July story
July Kufri is actively unpleasant. The unpaved trails are mud rivers. The horse operators work in rain with dejected animals. The ski slope is an unremarkable green hillside. The Nature Park is the only attraction that functions normally. The road from Shimla is prone to minor landslides. For the few tourists who end up at Kufri in July: the Nature Park (90 minutes), a quick maggi at a dhaba, and a return to Shimla is the sensible plan. Don't attempt the horse ride — muddy trails are unsafe for horses and unpleasant for riders. Budget: barely worth the drive cost. July Kufri is one of those places that exists on itineraries because it's been on itineraries for decades, not because it earns its place.
