Good Time
Shimla in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
March Shimla thaws. Snow retreats to Kufri and above, the town itself turns from white to brown-green, and temperatures climb to a comfortable 5-15°C. Rhododendrons start blooming on the hills around Mashobra and Naldehra (22 km out) — Shimla's version of cherry blossom season, though nobody markets it that way. The Ridge becomes walkable without ice-fear. Mall Road foot traffic is light — schools are in session, summer rush is two months away. NH-5 is fully clear and the Chandigarh-Shimla drive (112 km, 3.5-4 hours) is pleasant. This is Shimla waking up after winter, stretching but not yet crowded.
The March story
March delivers Shimla's best balance of weather, access, and space. The Viceregal Lodge gardens start greening up — walk the grounds and see the building where Partition was decided in 1947. Christ Church and the neo-Gothic State Library are visible without tourist heads in every frame. Jakhoo Temple's 108-foot Hanuman statue has clear views of the snow line on the Himalayan range — visibility is excellent before pre-monsoon haze builds. The Naldehra Golf Course (oldest in India, 1903) opens for the season — non-members can play 9 holes for ₹500-800. Mashobra apple orchards show early bud activity. The Shimla State Museum on Mall Road is small but well-curated — Pahari miniature paintings and Gandhara sculptures deserve an hour. Toy train runs are gorgeous with wildflowers starting along the Barog-Solan stretch. Room rates are shoulder-season: 30-40% below May peaks. Restaurants are open but not heaving. You can actually get a table at Wake & Bake or Cecil's restaurant without waiting. This is Shimla for people who want Shimla, not Shimla the tourist attraction.
