Chamba in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
March stirs Chamba gently. Cherry and plum blossoms light up the hillsides, daytime temperatures reach 18-22°C, and the Ravi begins carrying snowmelt that gives it voice. The Chaugan meadow turns properly green, and the thousand-year-old temples look their best against spring skies.
The March story
Everything opens up. The road to Khajjiar (the so-called Mini Switzerland, 24 km away) is clear and the meadow is genuinely photogenic — a flat green disc ringed by deodars with a tiny lake at centre. Worth one visit, not three. More interesting is the drive to Bharmaur and its 84-temple Chaurasi complex, where stone carvings from the 7th century depict scenes that art historians travel from Europe to study. Back in Chamba, the Sui Mata fair preparations begin — the town's unique festival commemorating a queen's sacrifice for water. Rooms: ₹1,000-2,000/night.
