Peak Season
Kufri in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January Kufri is cold and hoping for snow — -5 to 5°C at 2622m. When snow falls, Kufri transforms from a dusty ski-resort-in-progress to a genuine winter playground just 16km from Shimla. Yak rides on snow, improvised skiing on the small slopes, and snowball fights draw weekend crowds from Shimla and Chandigarh. When snow doesn't fall, Kufri is a cold, brown hilltop with limited appeal.
The January story
Kufri's appeal is honest and limited: snow or no snow. With snow, the small ski slope (operated by the state tourism department, equipment rental Rs 500-1000) offers basic skiing for beginners and children. The yak rides in snow are genuinely fun. The Mahasu Peak walk (3km from the main area) in snow, with Himalayan views, rewards those who make the effort. Without snow, Kufri is a cold hilltop with a small zoo (Himalayan Nature Park: snow leopard, brown bear, musk deer in enclosures, Rs 80 entry) and horse/yak ride operators who'll take you up muddy trails. The food options are limited to dhabas serving maggi, momos, and chai. The road from Shimla (16km, 45 minutes) can be icy — drive carefully or hire a local taxi. January accommodation: stay in Shimla (much better options) and day-trip to Kufri. If insisting on staying near Kufri: a few resorts (Rs 2000-5000) and basic guesthouses (Rs 800-1500). Check snow conditions before visiting — the Shimla tourism office or any hotel in Shimla can tell you. Don't drive to Kufri expecting snow and finding brown hills.
