Kishtwar in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May is Kishtwar at full accessibility — 10-25°C with all roads open. The Paddar valley trek opens fully. The sapphire mines area (Sumcham, 4000m+) is accessible for serious trekkers. Kishtwar National Park trails are usable. The Chenab gorge is dramatic with snowmelt-swollen water. The town serves as the base for some of India's most extreme adventure terrain — class V rapids, unclimbed peaks, and trails that see maybe 50 trekkers a year.
The May story
May Kishtwar is when the adventure menu opens. The Paddar valley trek (4-5 days to the sapphire mine area) is possible for experienced trekkers with guides. The route passes through villages, alpine meadows, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the western Himalayas — comparable to anything in Ladakh but seen by 1% of the visitors. The Kishtwar National Park access trails are usable — the park is one of India's most remote protected areas, with confirmed snow leopard and brown bear populations. The Chenab rafting opens in late May for the boldest operators: class IV-V rapids through a gorge that rarely sees commercial traffic. The town serves as base camp: basic but functional hotels (Rs 1000-2500), restaurants serving Kashmiri-Dogri food, and the adventure agencies that make Kishtwar work. May temperatures (10-25°C) are comfortable. The Jammu-Kishtwar road is at its most reliable. Carry everything you'll need — resupply options beyond Kishtwar are zero.
