May is one of Katra's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Vaishno Devi pilgrimage busiest spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov); winter snow and monsoon reduce pilgrim flow.
May at Katra is peak summer pilgrim season. Daytime 30-32C, nights 18-22C, the 13.5km uphill trek becomes physically demanding from 11am to 4pm — most veteran pilgrims start at 4am from Banganga or trek overnight. Daily pilgrim flow runs 40-55k weekdays, 60-70k weekends. School holidays drive heavy family traffic through the entire month. Helicopter from Katra-Sanjichhat (Pawan Hans, ₹2,320 one-way / ₹4,640 round-trip, books at iaffire.gov.in 60 days ahead) sells out 30-45 days in advance. RFID Yatra Parchi registration is required and best done online. Battery car for the Adkuwari-Bhawan last 2km runs at full capacity; queues at Adkuwari can hit 90 minutes. Pony service ₹600-1,000 each way (rates Shrine Board-fixed but vary by stretch). Hotels in Katra (Hotel Asia, Country Inn, Hotel Subash, KC Residency) at 90+ percent occupancy with rates 50-60 percent above January. The Bhawan Aarti queue runs 3-4 hours during peak weekends. Carry water (refill stations every 1-2km on the trail), ORS, sunscreen.
