January at Kaza is when the Spiti plateau runs at its hostile best. Daytime -2 to -8C, nights drop to -20 to -25C. Manali-Spiti route is closed (Kunzum Pass snowbound from late October to late May). Only the Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza road stays open year-round, with 1-7 day closures common between Nako and Kaza after heavy snow (the Shichilling stretch below Dhankar is the worst-hit zone). HRTC runs a daily Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza bus (~14 hours, ₹500-650, weather permitting). Hotel Sakya, Hotel Deyzor and Spiti Sarai stay open through winter; most village homestays close from November to April. The serious winter draw is the Kibber snow-leopard tracking circuit (run by operators like Spiti Ecosphere, ₹120k-180k for 8-10 day expeditions). BSNL is the only reliable cellular carrier; ATM at SBI Kaza is unreliable — carry cash from Reckong Peo. Carry sub-zero gear; even hotel rooms struggle to hold above 5C without bukhari.
