February at Kaza is the coldest single month. Nights drop to -25 to -28C, daytime peaks at -3 to -5C, the air is dry enough to make breathing painful at 3,800m. The Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza road remains the only access; 2-3 multi-day closures across the month are normal (the Nako-Kaza stretch is the chokepoint). HRTC bus runs when the road is clear. Hotel Sakya and Hotel Deyzor are the two reliably-open winter hotels. The Kibber snow-leopard tracking season is at peak — operators (Spiti Ecosphere, Snow Leopard Trust India partners) run 8-10 day expeditions from Kibber village, success rate around 70-80 percent on sightings. Key Monastery (12km from Kaza) is open but the road is icy. BSNL holds for cellular; Jio works only intermittently. SBI ATM frequently empty — carry cash from Reckong Peo. Bukhari heating in hotel rooms is non-negotiable. Acclimatisation matters even at 3,800m: take a slow first day, drink butter tea.
