Peak crowds
September is one of Kaza's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. High-altitude Spiti valley only accessible Jun–Sep when snow clears; winter (Dec–Mar) roads closed; monsoon peaks Jul–Aug with clear skies.
September at Kaza is the year's most coherent window. Daytime 18-22C, nights 5-8C, monthly rainfall under 25mm. The Manali-Spiti monsoon hangover clears from the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Gramphu approach in the first fortnight; landslide risk drops to near-zero. Apricot harvest in Tabo and Sumdo runs through the first 15 days. Air quality on the plateau is at year-best — combination of post-monsoon clarity, low humidity, and clean skies allows visibility of 80-100km on clear days. Hotel Sakya, Deyzor, Spiti Sarai still at near-peak occupancy; bookings settle to 1-2 weeks lead time. Chandratal still open through to late month. Pin Valley NP, Komic, Hikkim, Langza, Key Monastery, Tabo, Dhankar all at full operation. The high-altitude blue-sky photography is best in September. SBI ATM unreliable; carry ₹15k cash. AMS protocols unchanged. Last clean window before the October-November shutdown of the Manali approach.
