Snow blocks road access and high altitude makes February too harsh for safe trekking
February at Hemkund Sahib is the year's coldest stretch. Daytime at the shrine peaks at -15C, nights -28C, snow accumulation at the lake basin runs 4-7m. The trek from Govindghat through Pulna, Bhyundar Village and Ghangaria is buried. Snow clearance by the Indian Army's Sashastra Seema Bal and the Gurdwara Trust crews has not yet started — the yatra opening preparation begins in March. Govindghat itself remains reachable from Joshimath (14km, 30 minutes) but the shrine and the entire yatra route are closed. The 2026 yatra opens May 25 (announced by the Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust); February falls firmly outside the season.
