Shrine closes seasonally and 15ft snow blocks all access routes
January at Hemkund Sahib is the deep-winter closure. The shrine kapaat (the Gurdwara doors at 4,329m) are closed since mid-October — the Hemkund Sahib Trust does not operate the shrine through winter. Ghangaria base camp (3,049m, the village 6km below the shrine) is buried under accumulating snow with all gurdwara dharamshala beds, GMVN tents and private lodges closed. The 14km trek from Govindghat (1,828m) to Ghangaria via Pulna and Bhyundar Village is impossible. Daytime at Hemkund peaks at -10C, nights -25C. At Govindghat, daytime 5-8C, nights -2 to -5C — the village functions for residents but the yatra infrastructure is shut. The 2026 yatra opens May 25 and closes October 10 (announced by the Gurdwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust); January falls firmly outside the season.
