Peak Season
Gopeshwar in October
Uttarakhand, India
October is Gopeshwar at its most photogenic. Clear skies, snow-capped peaks visible from town, temperatures at 8-18°C, and the Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila circuit in prime condition. Autumn colours — golden oaks, copper-toned bugyals — make the trek visually different from spring. Dussehra celebrations in the region bring local fairs and processions. This is high season again: book Chopta stays a week ahead minimum. The road to Badrinath stays open through October before closing for winter. Early morning frost is possible above 3000m — layer up for dawn starts.
The October story
The Chandrashila sunrise in October is the single best viewpoint experience in the Garhwal Himalayas outside of a serious mountaineering expedition. Nanda Devi (7816m), Trisul (7120m), and Chaukhamba (7138m) are visible simultaneously on clear mornings, which in October means most mornings. The Tungnath temple is open but approaching its winter closure date — priests perform elaborate evening aartis knowing the season is ending. Deoria Tal in autumn colours is worth the 3 km uphill from Sari — golden grasses frame the lake perfectly. Gopeshwar's Dussehra celebrations include a local mela with hill music, wrestling matches, and village craft stalls. Room rates: ₹1500-2500 in Chopta, ₹1000-1800 in Gopeshwar. Book ahead for the Dussehra week. The Badrinath highway closes by late October, so if you want to combine destinations, move fast. Pack warm layers — frost is real above 3000m by 6 AM.
