Gopeshwar in June
Uttarakhand, India
Monsoon arrives within weeks, so this is your last chance for ridge walks before trails close until September
Peak crowds
June is one of Gopeshwar's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Small Garhwal town, base for Chopta trek. Passes through during Char Dham yatra season but not a bottleneck.
June splits into two halves. Early June offers the last window of dry trekking before monsoon arrives around the 15th. Once the rains hit, Gopeshwar transforms — waterfalls appear on every hillside, the Alaknanda swells dramatically, and landslides become a real concern on mountain roads. Chopta gets foggy and wet, making the Tungnath trail slippery and visibility poor. The Valley of Flowers trek officially opens but reaching Sari village requires navigating uncertain road conditions. Carry rain gear for everything, including your backpack.
The June story
If you're here in early June, the Chopta-Tungnath trail is at its greenest and the high meadows have wildflower carpets just starting. By mid-June, switch your focus: the Valley of Flowers trek from Govindghat (via Ghangaria) officially opens and the first blooms — primulas, geraniums, potentillas — appear. The 13 km Govindghat-to-Ghangaria trail is well-maintained but river crossings can be intimidating in high water. Gopeshwar serves as a logical base before heading to the trek. Rooms drop to ₹800-1500 as monsoon scares away casual visitors. Pack waterproof everything — your bag, boots, phone. Leeches appear above 2000m; carry salt or lemon. Road conditions require patience: a 3-hour drive can become 6 hours after a landslide. GMVN and SDRF updates are essential daily checks. The upside — waterfalls that don't exist in any other season turn the Alaknanda valley into something out of a nature documentary.
Why June scores 6.0/10
