January is Bharatpur's headline month. Keoladeo National Park (formerly Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary) is at peak migration — Siberian cranes (if they still come), common cranes, shovelers, pochards, and over 350 species in 29 sq km of marsh and woodland. This is India's greatest birding event.
The January story
Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the world's great birding sites — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that packs over 350 bird species into 29 sq km of marshland, scrub, and woodland. January is peak season: the winter migrants from Central Asia and Siberia are settled, the water levels (dependent on previous monsoon) determine which areas are flooded, and the early-morning birding walks are in comfortable 8-20°C temperatures. Hire a cycle-rickshaw guide at the park entrance — these men know every nesting tree, every perch, and every water channel. The best birders are the rickshaw-wallahs, not the naturalists. Expect: common crane, spot-billed duck, gadwall, shoveler, teal, painted stork, black-necked stork, and with luck, the iconic sarus crane. The Bharatpur Palace and Lohagarh Fort add non-birding interest. Hotels near the park gate are adequate.
