The March story
March is the farewell for migrants and the beginning of the great nesting season. The winter visitors — ducks, waders, cranes — begin their return journey to Central Asia and Siberia, and the resident species pivot to breeding. The heronry (mixed nesting colony of storks, cormorants, herons, and egrets) is building toward its April peak. Sarus cranes are paired and territorial. Indian robin, Indian roller, and kingfisher species are in their brightest plumage. March temperatures (25-33°C) make midday uncomfortable but mornings and late afternoons are prime birding hours. The park's woodland trails offer shade and species that the open marsh doesn't: owls, barbets, treepies, and parakeets. If you can only visit once and want both migrants and nesting species, late February or early March is the overlapping sweet spot. The town of Bharatpur itself is unremarkable — the park is the entire point.
