January is one of Jaipur's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Literature Festival (Jan) books out every hotel. Summer is 45°C but cheap. Diwali weekend is lovely but packed.
January is Jaipur at its absolute best. Daytime temperatures of 10°C to 22°C make walking the city a pleasure instead of a punishment. The Jaipur Literature Festival — India's biggest, 250,000+ attendees over five days at Diggi Palace — takes over the city in the last week of January. The sky is clear blue, the pink sandstone walls glow warm in winter light, and the forts are cool enough to explore for hours without collapsing. This is peak tourist season: Amber Fort sees 10,000-15,000 visitors per day, and the Old City bazaars are thick with Indian and international tourists.
The January story
JLF alone justifies a January trip — it's free entry, world-class authors, and the social event of India's literary calendar. But beyond that, January Jaipur is simply the most comfortable version of the city. Amber Fort (8AM entry, 500 rupees) is best tackled first thing before tour buses arrive at 10AM. The light-and-sound show at Nahargarh Fort in the evening is worth it at 200 rupees. City Palace takes a solid 2-3 hours and the textile gallery alone is worth the 700-rupee ticket. Hawa Mahal is best photographed from the chai shop across the street around 4PM when the light hits the facade. January is when Jaipur's street food peaks — kachori at Rawat Mishthan Bhandar, lassi at Lassiwala on MI Road (the original one, ignore the imposters next door). Hotel rates are at their highest: 5,000-15,000 for good mid-range, 25,000+ for heritage properties. JLF week adds a 30-50% premium on top. Book everything at least 3 weeks ahead.
